Easy day at the shelter! Caught a break from the dishwashing today and helped out in the kitchen the whole time.
My daughter, Monique and I chopped up tons of onions and garlic for Shepherd’s pie. Trust the world’s biggest onion and garlic lover to be in charge of the quantities to add to the meat! Layered the ground beef, corn, carrots and peas. Then, it was time to add the mashed potatoes. Or, as Big Ant, the cook/daytime manager, calls it: smashed potatoes. You’ve never seen a more energetic mashing of potatoes done if you’ve been around Big Ant hard at work with a masher and a huge pot full of cooked potatoes, a pound of butter and some milk. He said he could skip the gym today after a work-out in the kitchen. A heaping layer of mashed potatoes was added to the dish and then topped off with some parmesan cheese.
We were very fortunate. A donor had brought in a very large amount of potatoes: pre-peeled for us! That sure saved time. Another donor brought in plenty of pork. Pulled pork on the menu for tomorrow night.
I served up Vanilla Supreme cake, Maple Mousse Cake–I called it Messy Maple Mousse cake– and a fruit flan with strawberries, mandarin oranges and kiwi on top with whipped cream. Looked delicious! The plates of dessert disappeared quickly.
I asked a man how he was doing and he replied he was kind of miserable. He left his shopping cart with his belongings in it for a few minutes, and someone stole his cart and his coat. With his only fork, knife and spoon in it. And some refreshments and snacks in the pockets. Unbelievable. He got a new coat, and extra cutlery and food from the shelter. And left with a smile on his face!
Another man came by with his grand-daughter in a baby carrier, content on his chest. His daughter is in need of size 1 pampers, Similac with Iron and any clothing. She currently has four sleepers, size 0-3 months. And, from the looks of it, they’ll be outgrown by next week. Breaks my heart. If anyone wishes to contribute, just let me know. The shelter usually accepts adult clothing. This is a special request. Thanks!
